A Fijian Dictionary compiled in 1991, by A. Capell for the Government of Fiji

In this dictionary, are some of the chief grammatical peculiarities of the leading dialects of Fiji other than that of Bau. The strongest line of demarcation passes through the centre of Viti Levu from north to south. West of that line own dialect variations - for it is right to regard it as really a separate language with its eastern group, of which Bauan is best known representative. Besides numerous differences in vocabulary, the verb is conjugated in quite a different manner.

The dialects of Vauna Levu are distinguished by the marks mentioned in the Introductory sections (see p. viii) The extra symbols required are used here with the same values as in that section. The Lau dialect has many Tongan elements.

Both grammatical structure and words differ greatly in the various dialects. Where the same roots are used, regular sound changes take place Introductory section referred to. Here follow tables of some of the chief dialect features, viz, pronouns, cardinal and passive, and verbal and tense particles for verbs.
